Kent ISD Names Dr. Laura Preuss Next Director of Adult Education
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Dr. Laura Preuss has been named the new Director of Adult Education for Kent ISD, succeeding long-time director Oogie Lamar who will retire in January. Preuss served previously as Director of Workforce Development at DeWys Metal Solutions and earned her Ph.D. from Western Michigan University with an emphasis in Career and Technical Education. She also has an MA in Adult and Higher Education from Grand Valley State University and will begin working to complete her Michigan school administrator certification.
While at DeWys, Preuss was instrumental in the creation of DeWys University. The university encompassed all the on-site training and development of team members. Because of this program DeWys is capable of developing people of diverse backgrounds, giving them the knowledge and ability to be successful in the manufacturing environment. Her experience in local business and training employees will be beneficial in her role directing Adult Education and preparing students for meaningful careers.
“While this will be her first position officially within public education, much of her work in industry has paralleled aspects of Adult Education,” said Ron Koehler, Kent ISD Superintendent. “With her experience in workforce development and training for adults, we are excited about what Dr. Preuss will bring to our program, our partners and the community.”
Preuss will lead along with Lamar to ensure a smooth transition for Kent ISD Adult Education. The program serves adults seeking GED or high school equivalency, English as a Second Language and opportunities for career and technical training. Nearly 80 adult students successfully completed GED courses in the 22-23 academic year.
The Kent ISD school board approved the selection of Preuss as the next Director of Adult Education at their meeting on July 24. Please direct media inquiries to Joy Walczak, Kent ISD Communications Specialist at email@example.com or 906.632.6290.
