An Update on Howard Christensen Nature Center
Kent ISD recognizes that Howard Christensen Nature Center means a great deal to many in our community. We understand the memories, history, and connections people have with the Center, which we appreciate and respect. This significance, combined with increasingly limited use by schools and ongoing costs, led us to transition the care of this important space to the Land Conservancy of West Michigan to preserve it indefinitely.
All decisions about the sale have been carefully considered and weighed by our Board and leaders who have listened to community members, met with a variety of stakeholders, and analyzed options. Ultimately, Kent ISD’s commitment remains to honor the Christensen family who generously donated the property, and to respect the legacy of that gift by ensuring its protection.
With their sole focus on nature and nature preservation, LCWM requested Kent ISD remove structures on the property, as the terms of the purchase agreement allow. During their October meeting, our Board approved a proposal for this work. The existing structures will be carefully cleared and the land repaired in the coming months.
We understand that the buildings have been an important part of the Nature Center and its programs and activities for many years. Not taken lightly, the decision was made knowing the Christensen family supports LCWM and their plans.
The Land Conservancy of West Michigan is a nature-first organization, led by experts in land stewardship, with a mission to conserve ecologically critical land. They are bound by terms within the purchase agreement, their own bylaws and policies, and their accreditation requirements to permanently protect Howard Christensen Nature Center. Under their care, the space will remain open to the public and the trails free to access.
