The Cross-Cultural Competencies (click for order form) were established by the KISA/KCC/Kent ISD Diversity Initiative Team. Kent County has been working on the Cross-Cultural Competencies for Kent ISD over the last two years with individual and institutional support from the county’s public and private schools. This flipbook has been developed to assist teachers with the integration of these competencies into the classroom.
Teaching with a multicultural mindset is much more than knowledge delivered to students about various cultures at different points in the curriculum. It is a way of looking at life, a way of understanding how culture influences our very existence as well as the existence of those we teach on a daily basis. It is an on-going consciousness of the impact of various aspects of living and, in particular, aspects of teaching and learning on people of various cultures.
Cross-Cultural Competency is best used to prepare students to live, learn, and work in a global community.
Six Cross-Cultural Competencies contained in the flipbook: The Learner Will (TLW)…
I. Knowledge of One’s Own Culture: TLW demonstrate knowledge of one’s own culture, including its strengths and limitations and how this culture has influenced one’s own perspectives and experiences.
II. Elements of Culture: TLW explain specific elements of culture and discuss human similarities and differences across cultural groups using these elements.
III. Contributions: TLW identify and explain prominent examples of the contributions of different cultural groups to historical and contemporary human society.
IV. Prejudice & Discrimination: TLW be able to analyze examples of culturally-based privilege, power, and discrimination and to explain the negative effects of this on individuals and our society.
V. Conflict Resolution: TLW take appropriate actions to stop overt bulling, harassment, and discrimination against those from other cultural groups.
