BACKGROUND ON THE KISA/KCC/KENT ISD DIVERSITY AND HEALING RACISM INITIATIVE
In 2001 the Kent ISD Superintendents adopted diversity and healing racism as a county-wide initiative. Listening sessions were held with community stakeholders to gather ideas/information on diversity and healing racism issues. District and community representatives collaborated and developed the "Habits and Indicators of Highly Inclusive School Districts" document. This document is referred to and revised on a regular basis and functions as a guide to district "Champions of Diversity Teams" as each plans its own strategies to address diversity and healing racism.
The Initiative's Leadership Team meets monthly to network and to collaborate in planning meetings for coordinators - the purpose is to assist coordinators with information and activities to share with their district teams. Last year and continuing this year, a primary focus has been on developing cross culturally competent staff and students.
Kent ISD has made a commitment to support this initiative.
