KeyTrain

Goals of the Work Readiness KeyTrain Program in the 2010-11 school year:

Provide weekly computer lab time and support to all at-risk students enrolled at KTC to improve KeyTrain scores.

1.     Assist students in identifying their career potential, increase their WorkKeys scores, provide community links that would strengthen the student’s character development to make a smooth transition from Adapted Vocational Education to Work Based Learning, and to be successful in school, the work force and the community.

2.     Collect data over the course of three trimesters to provide documentation to local districts showing the progress that students have made directly resulting from the support provided at KTC.  Student scores are recorded on PowerSchool student information system and reports can be generated anytime online.

3.     Identified 24 students with scores 2 and below in Reading and identified 28 students with scores 2 and below in Math to provide extra help in Beginning Language and Beginning Math workbooks from the Student Success Coach.  These students would not receive a National Career Readiness Certificate without improving their scores.  This goal directly relates to student achievement at KTC and will be communicated to LEA’s to report student progress.

Student Achievement:

  •  October 2010:  15% of Student Population tested at Certificate Level (Pre-test results)
  • December 2010 Results:  42% of Student Population tested at Certificate Level
  • March 2011 Results:  57% of Student Population tested at Certificate Level
  • June 2011 Results:  85% of Student Population tested at Certificate Level

By providing time and support to at-risk students once a week for 30 minutes, students increased their levels of Reading, Mathematics and Locating Information.

KeyTrain scores are available in PowerSchool for LEA access.  Reports were printed weekly to monitor areas students were struggling in.  Staff worked with students in these areas to ensure progress in each subject.  The most frequent areas of difficulty were in:

  •  Applied Math:  Fractions, decimals and averages
  •  Reading for Information:  Alphabetizing and sequencing, nouns and verbs
  •  Locating Information:  Bar Graphs, pie charts and diagrams

Student success was celebrated at the annual Student Appreciation Day on May 20, 2011 with students receiving certificates, medals and trophies.  Students added Certificates to their KTC Portfolios.

KeyTrain Goals for 2011-12

We are actively pursuing new ways of teaching KeyTrain so all students at KTC can succeed.Key services to be provided by the Student Success Coach:

·       Identify the particular needs of each student

·       Include accommodations from IEP’s (extended time to work and having workbooks and tests read to students)

·       Develop lesson plans to address areas of most frequent difficulty

·       Provide additional one-on-one support to at-risk students in all course subject areas

·       Use computer-based math and reading programs for in-depth instruction

·       Use cutting-edge/interactive technology such as Voki (dynamic talking characters) to attract and hold the attention of today’s tech-savvy students

·       Increase total number of students testing at Certificate level to 90%
