The Discovery Center
Choose it!
Make the choice to come visit us at the Kent Transition Center. The Discovery Center is a welcoming place. Our informal setting and friendly staff help students explore their interests and talents. They can learn about us, learn about themselves and make some career decisions.
Learn It!
A bus from your student's school will provide transportation to KTC and back to school. Your student will spend two half-days learning about KTC and working with a group of four or five students. A Discovery Center staff member will greet each student on arrival and stay with this small group during all of their first day activities. Your student will meet the rest of the group and tour the entire building. Other activities in the Discovery Center include interest and skill surveys, career videos, one-on-one discussion time with their KTC staff member and group discussion.
All of these activities are designed to help students find out if the Kent Transition Center is the right place for them and which program (we have six!) suits them best. Our staff is dedicated to helping students and will answer questions the students have about careers, training and employment.
Do It!
This is the students' favorite part. After they explore their interests and abilities, they typically participate on the second day in class visits of their choice to experience hands-on learning. They get a chance to join in whatever the class is doing, from baking desserts to changing oil in cars or building a wall. In the classes, students will experience the same kinds of learning they do on a day-to-day basis if they choose to enroll.
After students complete their Discovery Center time, a summary of their activities is sent home to you and their home schools. Be sure to talk over this experience with your student to help him or her decide if KTC is the right choice. We hope it is!
