A Historical Perspective

Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership Academy is a beautiful, new, state-of-the-art facility serving students in grades pre-school through eighth. We are located in the heart of Grand Rapids, nestled between the historic Heritage Hill district and the revitalized Wealthy Street business corridor.  Located on the site of the former Henry Paidea Academy, the birth of Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership Academy reflects the renaissance of the surrounding community.   MLK is rooted in the tradition of academic achievement for ALL. It is a testament to the transformative power of education in the lives of children. MLK is a place where every child is empowered to become an educated, compassionate, self-directed, productive, and contributing member of society.  The guiding principles adopted by our staff include high expectations for all students to succeed, the importance of lifelong learning, appreciating and understanding that diversity is affirming and strengthens the community, consistency is a necessary component of education, and self-esteem is essential for personal growth.   This vision is implemented through the various programs and educational opportunities offered at Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership Academy.
