To be eligible to apply to Launch U, students must:
Be a current 9th grade student in a public or charter school in Kent County
Have a cumulative 8th grade GPA of 2.5 or higher
Have a cumulative 9th grade GPA of 2.5 or higher
Preparing to Apply
Talk to your parent or guardian.
Launch U students are held to the same standards as traditional college students and are expected to manage the rigour of college coursework. Support from a parent or guardian is necessary for the application process and success throughout the program.
Do some research.
Learn about the field of Mechanical Design and how you might fit into different career paths. While you are certainly not limited to the resources below, here are a few to get you started:
In the search box, type job titles such as Mechanical Drafter, Commercial and Industrial Designer, and Mechanical Engineering Technologist. Select an occuption and read through the various sections listed, such as skills, knowledge, abilities, work activities, tasks, and context. Consider whether these factors align with your interests, goals, and abilities.
In the “what” box, type in the job title Mechanical Designer. In the “where” box, type Grand Rapids, MI or another location of interest to you. Click "find jobs" to see the search results. Click on the various jobs and read through the descriptions, evaluating whether you can envision yourself in similar roles several years from now.

Launch U is offered through a partnership with Grand Rapids Community College. It is helpful to familiarize yourself with the differences between high school and college level expectations.

Included is each occupation’s projected annual job openings, hourly wage range, percent job growth through 2024, and required education/training. Notice job growth for “Commercial and Industrial Designers” and “Mechanical Engineering Technicians".
