Project Overview

Give a brief overview of the project you are planning.

We will put in place classroom recycle bins, use the composter (if set up) and empower students to educate other students about why we need to recycle and also how to recycle.

Service learning actively engages participants in meaningful and personally relevant service activities.

What community need will you address and how did you determine the need?

At the ECC there is currently no recycling and it is a major need. We throw away tons of paper.

What service will you provide to address the need?

Recycle bins and composter.

Service learning is intentionally used as an instructional strategy to meet learning goals and/or content standards.

How is this project related to your curriculum?

Science: Human environmental impact.

What are the educational goals?

To learn why recycling and composting is important to their community and their world.

Effective Practice: REFLECTION

Service learning incorporates multiple challenging reflection activities that are ongoing and that prompt deep thinking and analysis about oneself and one's relationship to society.

What form(s) of reflection will you use with the students to help them identify what they have learned and accomplished?

Journaling, whole group discussion, KWL charts, make a class book about what we learned and why recycling is so important.

 

Effective Practice: DIVERSITY

Service learning promotes understanding of diversity and mutual respect among all participants.

What types of diverse perspectives and experiences will be explored as part of your project?  (i.e.: cultural, generational, abilities/disabilities, learning styles, etc)

Hands-on, all types of people are affected by recycling. Kids will see that is effects the whole world.

 

Effective Practice: YOUTH VOICE

Service learning provides youth with a strong voice in planning, implementing, and evaluating service learning experiences with guidance from adults.

How will students gain ownership of the project?

They will make and distribute paper recycle bins that will be used by the whole school. They will be told that they are the leaders of this project and have the responsibility to explain how to recycle to the rest of their classes this fall.

Kent County Recycling Facility

How will students benefit from this partnership?

They will learn skills necessary to plan, and carry out a plan, to make this project happen. (paper recycling program in each classroom)

How will the partner benefit from this collaboration?

They will capture the dedication of young citizens who will participate in life-long recycling.

Service learning engages participants in an ongoing process to assess the quality of implementation and progress toward meeting specified goals, and uses results for improvement and sustainability.

How will you assess the student learning goals?

Informal assessments- class books, KWLs and journals

Completed project - recycle bins in every classroom

Service learning has sufficient duration and intensity to address community needs and meet specified outcomes.

How will you prepare students for this experience?

Field trips to the recycling center, read alouds, making paper, gardening, movie clips

Make recycle bins

Make a class book

Have a presentation to parents about what we have all learned.

We will have these students educate other students and parents on how to recycle and the importance of recycling.
