Project Overview

Give a brief overview of the project you are planning.

The 2nd grade students would record a public service announcement in an effort to recruit more mentors for the Kids Hope program headed by Daybreak Community Church.


Effective Practice: MEANINGFUL SERVICE

Service learning actively engages participants in meaningful and personally relevant service activities.

What community need will you address and how did you determine the need?

A need for more mentors for Kids Hope, which is a program that matches adult mentors with at-risk children.

Many students in the Godfrey Lee School District are at risk for school failure. This has been identified through various Title I data collecting instruments. Because of this, Daybreak Community Church has chosen this district to launch their Kids Hope program. This program matches an adult mentor to a specific child (identified by classroom teachers and parents). Currently, there are more children identified as in need of a mentor than actual mentors available.

What service will you provide to address the need?

The 2nd grade students would plan, write, and record a public service announcement (with the help of Community Media Center) in an attempt to recruit new mentors for Kids Hope.

Effective Practice: REFLECTION

Service learning incorporates multiple challenging reflection activities that are ongoing and that prompt deep thinking and analysis about oneself and one's relationship to society.

What form(s) of reflection will you use with the students to help them identify what they have learned and accomplished?

The students and teacher will do a shared writing piece before the project begins. This piece will be about why we are doing this project.

Also before the project begins, the students will write a prediction about how they think they will feel after the project is completed.

After the project, students again will write about their feelings and how successful they feel the project was.


Effective Practice: DIVERSITY

Service learning promotes understanding of diversity and mutual respect among all participants.

What types of diverse perspectives and experiences will be explored as part of your project?  (i.e.: cultural, generational, abilities/disabilities, learning styles, etc)

Since the Daybreak Community Church is located in a community that is very different that the school community, the students will gain an understanding of what their community looks like from the perspective of another community. They will also be able to see how people from different communities care about one another.

During the project, students will be able to think about their strengths and weaknesses as learners. The project will need all types of learners, from action-oriented to linguistic. The students will be able to see the value in each kind of learner.

The idea of elementary students working alongside adults to complete the project is a great example of diversity, and will help to strengthen the project.


Effective Practice: YOUTH VOICE

Service learning provides youth with a strong voice in planning, implementing, and evaluating service learning experiences with guidance from adults.

How will students gain ownership of the project?

The students will be the ones actually writing the script for the PSA (and possibly choosing the actual one to be used if there is more than one). The script will be read by students in the class, literally using the students' voices. The students will also help decide on the footage that needs to be filmed. They will also assist in the actual filming of the PSA. Students, upon completion of the filming, will also help decide on any edits that need to be made.



Service learning partnerships are collaborative, mutually beneficial, and address community needs.

Who will you partner with for this project?

Daybreak Community Church- Hudsonville, MI

How will students benefit from this partnership?

Daybreak has already done so much for the students in our elementary schools, and they continue to do so through Kids Hope, as well as various book and clothing drives for the students in the district. This project is meant to show Daybreak not only gratitude, but how they are helping to empower young students to go out into the world and make a difference.

How will the partner benefit from this collaboration?

There is a need for more adult mentors to work with children in the Godfrey Lee School District through the Kids Hope program. Since Kids Hope at Godfrey Lee is run through Daybreak, the second graders will help recruit more mentors through their public service announcement.



Service learning engages participants in an ongoing process to assess the quality of implementation and progress toward meeting specified goals, and uses results for improvement and sustainability.

How will you assess the student learning goals?

The opinion writing assignment will be graded against the district's writing rubric to determine how well the students incorporated the writing standards into their piece.

The public service announcement script will be assessed according to a separate rubric from the opinion piece.

The initial writing piece, created as a class, regarding the reasons for doing the project will be used to assess whether the class as a whole understands the need to reciprocate kindness. A post-project writing piece about why the project was done could also be used.

How will you assess your service goals?

If the students help produce a public service announcement that communicates the need for more adult mentors for the Kids Hope program, and it can be aired on public television or at Daybreak Community Church, then the project will be viewed as a success. Further down the road, if we hear that the Kids Hope program did actually gain more mentors since the showing of our PSA, then that would add to the success of the project.



Service learning has sufficient duration and intensity to address community needs and meet specified outcomes.

How will you prepare students for this experience?

I will spend time discussing with the class the various things Daybreak has done for our students. Included in this discussion would be questions such as

-Why do you think Daybreak wants to help our students?

-How does it feel to know that the people at Daybreak care so much about our students?

-How can we repay them for the kindness they have showed us?

I would like to have one of the coordinators for the Kids Hope program at Daybreak come and talk to the class and have the class be able to ask her questions to gain an understanding about the Kids Hope program. At this time, the need for mentors could be introduced.

I would show the class examples of public service announcements, preferably ones made by or using young children. I would then ask the students how they think we could make a PSA for Daybreak.

What are some sample possible activities students might do as part of this project?

Interview a Kids Hope coordinator.

Research recording tools on the internet.

Write various assignments and reflections.

Write and edit a script.

Film and edit a public service announcement.



The three arms of sustainability are environmental stewardship, economic growth, and social progress. Think planet, profit, and people.

Describe how your project addresses the issue of sustainability?

This project is a good example of aiding social progress. In a world consumed by getting more, beating the clock, and only looking out for ourselves, it is very easy to overlook any act of kindness. Instead of just expecting others to help in a time of need, this project attempts to show the students the reality behind these acts of kindness and how the students themselves can keep the cycle going by reciprocating with another act of kindness.
