Maltreated Young Children:  What do we See?  What do they Need?

Friday, September 16, 2005 9:00 am - 4:00pm

Place:  DeVos Children's Hospital East Auditorium - 100 Michigan Ave, Grand Rapids, MI

Presenter: Julie Ribaudo, MSW, ACSW

Audience: Service providers, home visitors, early interventionists and care-givers
Cost:  $20.00

Recent brain development research confirms the impact of abuse, neglect, and poor parent-child relationships on the development of young children.  Increasing numbers of children are entering community settings without a “secure” attachment with a primary caregiver.  Communities are being confronted with the challenge of meeting the needs of these children across systems, including families, childcare programs, and schools.  Most treatment in the past has focused on behavioral interventions with the child, often with poor outcomes.

This workshop will address, explore, and define the underlying needs that are being expressed through behavior.  Specific forms of parenting therapy, educational and programmatic responses to children with insecure attachments will be discussed.

The trainer will give tips and techniques needed to teach signs for mealtime, playtime and bed time, as well as games to play with babies to promote learning.  Lecture, video examples and practice with signing will be used.

Presenters: Katherine Rosenblum, PhD and Maria Muzik, MD

Clinical practice in infant mental health often requires practitioners to access and intervene with high-risk, problematic, parent-infant relationships.  This seminar is designed to provide practitioners with an introduction to attachment theory and research, with an emphasis on the implications of this theoretical model for clinical practice with infants and families.  The seminar will provide a bio-psycho-social view of attachment from both normative and high-risk perspectives, with an emphasis on understanding the origins of clinical disturbances in parent-child relationships.  Specific topics covered will include current research on the biological underpinnings of attachment disorder, current trends and controversies in the assessment of attachment disorders, and an overview of attachment relationship-based interventions.  Clinical vignettes and videotapes will be used to illustrate relevant topics.

This 3 to 6 hour training will detail scoring and determining developmental levels, strengthening skills in utilizing the HELP as an on-going assessment, involving parents in enhancing the development of their child. Support will be given in understanding how to connect HELP with the results of a multidisciplinary evaluation. The HELP at Home can be best utilized in the child’s natural environment.   Understanding and Assessing Cry Problems in Early Infancy

Friday, May 5, 2006 9:00 am - 4:00pm

Place:  DeVos Children's Hospital East Auditorium - 100 Michigan Ave, Grand Rapids, MI

Presenter: Zach Boukydis, PhD

Audience: Service providers, home visitors, early interventionists and care-givers

Cost: $20.00

The purpose of this workshop is to have a broader understanding of cry problems in early infancy and provide more effective means for evaluating the situation when parents first indicate that they are having trouble with their infant’s crying.

Participants will learn a comprehensive intake interview and will learn to use infant cry and sleep diaries and other methods with parents to establish possible patterns of cry/sleep/feed/wake. Using the comprehensive intake process, participants will learn to clarify how much of the crying concern resides “in” the infant “in” the parent, or “in” the parent-infant interactional system.
