From Kent ISD Superintendent Kevin Konarska
Thanks to all of you - students, teachers, administrators and our Kent County partners - for being here! Northview High
School students - thank you for the wonderful gift of music welcoming us as we came in, thank you to Kelsey for
opening our program with your lovely poem.
Earth Day - especially on an anniversary like a 40th - would be just as celebrated without our Green School Awards,
but perhaps not as well served. While our schools are working hard in so many areas to be more earth-friendly, to become
greener, there was formerly no mechanism in place to recognize them. Of course the schools are teaching lots of earth
and environmental science and have been for decades. And they are encouraging the work of students and staff as they
expand from learning into the doing, from work in composting, energy, recycling, habitat creation, solar cooking, recyclable
art and so much more. All of this amazing effort deserves a bigger audience and some more recognition. And that's why we
created our Green Schools Awards Program - to celebrate your good work.
"Schools recognize more and more the need to reduce their environmental footprint.
Understanding how to get there, is another matter. Your Green Schools Awards
program helps districts understand the need to be aware and provides direction to
actually impacting this crucial issue."
