Student Photography on Display at Kent ISD
East Grand Rapids Students put Photography Skills
on Display at Kent ISD
GRAND RAPIDS – Art photography from East Grand Rapids High School artists is now on view at Kent ISD. More than a dozen enlargements of hand-developed black & white prints can be viewed in the lobby at 2930 Knapp NE during business hours through December 5.
The student artists are in grades 9-12, taught by East Grand Rapids Public Schools’ art teacher Terry Szpieg. “The world changes when viewed through the lens of a camera. Learning to slow down and examine everyday objects and environments for what they are is easier from behind the camera. I teach the value of taking time to carefully compose imagery and give sensitivity to subject, in all of my classes,” says Szpieg. “I never get tired of seeing the world through the eyes of my students. That is one of the biggest rewards of my job.”
The East Grand Rapids art display is one of a series during the year from schools within Kent ISD. Other districts with lobby displays this year include Caledonia Community Schools and Kelloggsville Public Schools.
Kent ISD also participates in Representative Vern Ehlers’ annual Congressional Arts Competition, serving as local judges and occasionally offering purchase awards to student winners.
