A recent editorial published in the Grand Rapids Press recognizes challenges facing students and educators and points to Kent School Services Network (KSSN) as an effective combatant to those problems. KSSN brings health and human services into the school building to serve students and families. These services include counseling, health care, financial aid and special events like parent meetings, dinners and workshops.

Things that happen from day to day in the homes of students affect their learning and participation in school. Extreme poverty, drug and alcohol abuse, domestic violence, safety and health concerns are just a few of the outside issues far too many children are lugging to school along with their books. A pilot program that integrates education and social and health services under one roof bodes well for school children, their families and the whole community.
