Students Excel in New Health Sciences Program
The Health Sciences Early College Academy just finished a very successful first year. KCTC seniors had the opportunity to enroll in the program which has locations at Central High School, Grand Valley Cook-Dewitt Center, Byron Center Administration building, or Metro Hospital. About forty students participated this year and twenty-two of them also earned six free college credits.
Through the program, students experienced and learned about careers in the health sciences. They explored DNA, RNA, phlebotomy, and X-ray equipment. They also had opportunities to perform ultrasounds, blood draws, EKGs and practice medical procedures on a simulated man. Students demonstrated the skills they learned in the program during their final presentations at the end of May. Many of the students will apply their free credits at local colleges like Grand Rapids Community College, Ferris State University and Grand Valley in the fall.
