Kent ISD Hosts Early Language Learners Conference

Kent ISD proudly hosted the National Network for Early Language Learners (NNELL) 2009 Central States Regional Conference. The conference was one of only four held this year and drew educators from all over Michigan, Illinois, Ohio and New York.

Participants explored various topics of language learning including how to build a balanced second language program, how to use interactive techniques to present new vocabulary in a second language and how to keep all learners engaged in a second language classroom.

The conference featured Dr. Helena Curtain, a top researcher and author on elementary foreign language teaching. Dr. Curtain travels throughout the world teaching language teachers and it was an honor to have her come to Kent ISD.

“The participants were thrilled to meet Dr. Curtain,” said Casey Gordon, Kent ISD English Language Learners and World Languages Coordinator. “She’s a huge influence on language learning and has helped shape current program models and best practices. This was a rare opportunity to see her present.”

The conference was one of several offerings through Kent ISD’s English Language Learners (ELL) program. Click here to see more ELL professional development opportunities at Kent ISD.
