East Grand Rapids Student Art on Display at Kent ISD

East Grand Rapids High School students are displaying their photography at Kent ISD. The hand-developed, black and white photographs can be viewed in the lobby at 2930 Knapp NE during business hours now through May 6.

The student photographers in grades 10 through 12, taught by art teacher Terry Szpieg, learn the traditional photography process including the mechanics of a film camera, chemical processes and developing images in a darkroom. The students also learn photography as a fine art discipline through composition, light and other classic artistic elements.

"The world changes when viewed through a camera. I try to help my students develop an appreciation and sensitivity for things that are often overlooked by being careful, analytical and creative about composition, exposure, chemistry and light. Patience and understanding are just a couple things they discover along the way," says Szpieg. "I consider myself extremely lucky to work with such dynamic students in such an exciting medium."

The East Grand Rapids High School art display is one of a series during the year from schools within Kent ISD. Other districts with lobby displays this year included Kentwood, Byron Center and Plymouth Christian High School. Caledonia student work will be on display in May.

Kent ISD also participates in annual Congressional Arts Competition, serving as local judges and occasionally offering purchase awards to student winners.
